Solitary specimens tend to be very shy. Spiny eels present certain problems to aquarists that need to be taken care of, but they are intelligent and rewarding pets nonetheless. Spiny eels like to dig, and generally do best in tanks with a sandy substrate. Spiny eels are notorious escape artists, and the aquarium must be securely covered. Finally, spiny eels are tricky to feed and will not eat dried foods or flake. Frozen bloodworms are enjoyed as a staple, but live foods such as earthworms and tubifex are very good for conditioning newly imported specimens.
